Stone Brewing Co. announced on their blog a new barrel-aged (and other ‘special treatment’) bottle release series called Quingenti Millilitre which translates (from Latin I believe) to 500 milliliters, the size of the bottles these beers will be packaged in.
The first beer to be released will be the Ken Schmidt / Maui / Stone Kona Coffee Macadamia Coconut Porter Aged in Bourbon Barrels. The original beer (non-barrel-aged) first released in September 2009, was the result of Ken Schmidt winning Stone’s AHA Rally homebrew contest leading to his collaborating with Stone and Maui Brewing Co. to brew his beer on Stone’s system for commercial release.
When released, the bourbon barrel-aged version will only be sold at the brewery, and only 672 bottles will be sold according to Stone’s blog post. The tentative release date is set for sometime in July. I’d guess there will be long lines, bottle limits and more than likely not everyone that wants to get a bottle of this initial release will be able to.
Chances are the Quingenti Millilitre releases should grow in size as time goes on and Stone acquires more barrels and grows their barrel aging program. They note that they have just received 346 Scotch whisky barrels. I expect it will be a long time before the Quingenti Millilitre beers ever see widespread distribution, but hopefully given some time the releases will become larger and spread a bit farther than selling only at Stone’s facilities.
I got to try a 2008 Stone Imperial Russian Stout aged in Bourbon Barrels at Stone Oakquinox last month and it was fantastic. Good things are sure to come out of Quingenti Millilitre bottles.
