Ballast Point Indra Kunindra

Indra KunindraThis beer is like no other beer I’ve ever had before. Brewed with madras curry, caynne pepper, cumin, toasted coconut, and kaffir lime leaf, Indra Kunindra is a 9% ABV stout brewed in collaboration with homebrewer Alex Tweet. Indra Kunindra was the winner of Holiday Wine Cellar’s 2nd Annual Homebrew competition last year, which is why it was chosen to be brewed at Ballast Point and I believe it is Ballast Point’s entry for the Pro-Am competition at the National Homebrewers Conference going on in Mission Valley right now.

Indra Kunindra smells like walking into a highly aromatic Indian food restaurant. It smells like a plate of curry was set down right in front of me. The taste is much the same, I tasted cumin and coconut and a bit of citrus which I can only assume was the kaffir lime leaf. I felt the heat from the cayenne pepper soon after I finished my first sip, but it wasn’t an unpleasant heat. The beer felt much thinner than I expected from a 9% ABV stout, but that isn’t a complaint just an observation.

The four ounce taster, which cost me a dollar plus tax at Ballast Point Linda Vista/Homebrew Mart, was probably just the right amount of this beer that I would want to drink in one sitting. One friend told me the aftertaste lingered unpleasantly for quite a while, which I didn’t experience but I could easily see that happening. As soon as I took my first sip I did immediately wished I had some food, something like a garlic naan bread. This is a beer that seems like it was made to go with food, but you would have to be careful to find the right combo where the beer wouldn’t overpower the food.

The June issue of West Coaster has a recipe for a scaled down version of Curry Stout that looks to be very similar to this one as well as a recipes for Prawn Curry with Fresh Pineapple & Asparagus and a Curry Paste courtesy of Ballast Point’s Specialty Brewer (the brewer that collaborated with Tweet on this beer) Colby Chandler.

Edit: Ballast Point recently received label approval for 22oz bottles of Indra Kunindra

Green Flash Brewing Co.’s New Location

Green Flash Brewing Co.As I blogged about last year, Green Flash Brewing Co. is moving. At the end of the month they’ll shut down operations at their current facility in Vista and then start things up at their new brewery in Mira Mesa.

Sunday May 29th will be Green Flash’s last day brewing in Vista, they’ll celebrate with a Customer Appreciation Party from 12-4pm. Just a few days later on June 1st they’ll officially open the doors at the new facility at 6550 Mira Mesa Blvd. in San Diego. This will put Green Flash in good company not too far from AleSmith, Hess Brewing Co., and Ballast Point Scripps Ranch. The grand opening celebration will happen on Saturday July 23rd from 12-4pm.

The new location will have a 4000 square foot tasting room that will be open Wednesday through Sunday. Upon opening Green Flash will be brewing 45,000 barrels of beer per year at their new facility with the ability to grow to 100,000 barrels as needed.

San Diego Beer Events May 5th – May 11th

If you know of anything that isn’t on the events calendar, please email events@sandiegobeerblog.com to get it added.  Not all of the beer events happening in a given week make it on the list below, I pick one or two per day to avoid information overload. Make sure to check out the Events page or the calendar below this post for all the week’s events.

Thursday May 5th:

With Cinco de Mayo being such a beer drinking “holiday”, one would think there would be something craft beer related here in San Diego, just a few miles from the Mexican border, but if there is I couldn’t find it. So head down to Pizza Port Ocean Beach for their Wychwood Hobgoblin Keep the Glass night. I’ve never had the beer but I’ve heard good things, but just look at this glass.

Friday May 6th:

As with most Friday’s there’s Firkin Friday at Hamilton’s Tavern, this week with Ballast Point’s Sextant Stout aged on rum soaked oak chips.

If you’re looking for something a bit different head down to Petco Park before the Padres game for their first Beerfest of the season. From 4:30 until just before the first pitch at 7 they’ll be pouring beers from 25 different breweries. Admission to the Beerfest is free with your ticket to the Padres game and full size beers are just $5.

Saturday May 7th:

While not exclusively a beer event, Night on Adams is happening at various businesses up and down Adams Ave, there will be food, art, cocktails and of course beer. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday night and it gives you an excuse to stop into Blind Lady Ale House.

Sunday May 8th:

Tailgate Beer is organizing a Can Cancer Tailgate party at Petco Park before the Padres game on Mother’s Day. $35 gets you a couple of cans of Tailgate beer, a t-shirt, brunch and tickets to the game. Get more info here.

Monday May 9th:

It’s $3 local pint night at Toronado from 6pm to close. I think Eleven is still doing their pint night as well (all draft beers) but I haven’t heard much about it lately. I’ve sent an email over to the folks at Eleven to confirm their Monday night special is still on. I’ll update this post if I hear back.

And Blind Lady Ale House, usually closed on Monday’s will be opening each Monday in May, bar only, no food. They’ll be showing a different movie each week and MIHO Gastrotruck will be serving up food for a few hours, this week’s film is Career Courier, a documentary about bicycle messengers.

Tuesday May 10th:

Stone Brewing Co.’s latest pairing dinner, Master Pairings: Vegan Beer Dinner is sold out, so if you haven’t bought tickets you’re not getting in. And it doesn’t seem like there’s much else going on this Tuesday night. There’s a vegan beer dinner happening later in the week at a North Park restaurant, look for a post with more details soon.

Wednesday May 11th:

If you didn’t get enough of Maui Brewing Co.’s beers while founder Garrett Marrero was in town last week you’re in luck, Small Bar is hosting an Aloha Happy Hour with some of Maui Brewing’s beers. I couldn’t get enough of the Flyin’ HI.P.Hay which doesn’t appear to be on Small Bar’s list, but there’s bound to be some other good stuff from Maui.

Another Tax Day celebration, Downtown Johnny Brown’s is doing their 3rd Annual Bitter and Sour Night featuring some of the best IPAs and sours around. The lineup looks stellar, if you’re a fan of either of those styles (which if you’re reading this blog I would guess you like one of them if not both) this night is highly recommended.

Saturday April 16th: The Real Ale Festival is happening all day, from 11am to 11pm. $30 gets you in with eight 4oz tasters. Starting at 7pm they’ll let you in for $20.

Sunday April 17th: If you don’t already have tickets for Stone Oakquinox you’re out of luck, it’s sold out. But do if you happen by Stone make sure you have your growler with you, they’ll be doing 2008 Stone Old Guardian  Barley Wine Aged in  Red Wine Barrels growler fills.

Monday April 18th: It’s $3 local pint night at Toronado from 6pm to close. I think Eleven is still doing their pint night as well (all draft beers) but I haven’t heard much about it lately. I’ve sent an email over to the folks at Eleven to confirm their Monday night special is still on. I’ll update this post when I hear back.

Tuesday April 19th: The Master Pairings Beer and Chocolate pairing at Stone sounds delicious. I’m not sure what beers they’ll be serving but it’s sure to not disappoint.

Wednesday April 20th: Third Wednesday of the month means it’s time for the DrinkAbout. No word on any of the specials this month but it’s sure to be a good time as always.

They’re also doing another beer pairing dinner at Homebrew Mart/Ballast Point Linda Vista with MIHO Gastrotruck and Fiji Yogurt. Fiji is making a Ballast Point Even Keel wort based Lemonade Ginger Sorbet flavored with Cascade Hop Oil. They’ll have a ton of great beers on tap including Ginger Big Eye and DoBelgo DIPA (Dorado with Belgian Yeast).

Ballast Point’s Pale Ale has Lost Its Yellowtail (In Name Only)

Ballast Point Pale Ale

The New Ballast Point Pale Ale Label

Sometime in the past few months Ballast Point quietly changed the name of their Yellowtail Pale Ale to just Pale Ale. With the exception of a small graphic of the old six pack holder on the Pale Ale page, there is no mention of the previous name on Ballast Point’s website. I first noticed the change a few weeks ago when someone from out of town asked me about Ballast Point Pale Ale, I assumed he meant Yellowtail Pale Ale but I found the Yellowtail part of the name to have been removed. The last label approval I could find with the Yellowtail name (below) was in May of 2010 and the Pale Ale label (left) approval was granted in October of 2010.

Recently a few people with no direct connection to Ballast Point, but knowledge of the San Diego beer business told me that Ballast Point had been forced to change the name of their popular beer by the Australian winery that produces the Yellow Tail wine.

When asked for comment, asking specifically about the winery, Ballast Point sent me the following statement from Owner/CEO Jack White:

“We are changing the name for legal reasons. We can’t discuss the issue in detail, but we can tell you that it is the same beer brewed by the same people at the same brewery and portrays a picture of the same species of fish. We are proud of what is in the bottle and our artist/friend Paul Elder continues to create beautiful artwork so please keep on enjoying our Pale Ale”.

I called W.J. Deutsch & Sons, Ltd., the company that represents Yellow Tail wine in the United States and was transfered between two employees, both of which said they had no knowledge of the situation, but would have someone call me with more info. As of this writing I have not received a call back.

It’s sad that Ballast Point had to change the name of what might be their most recognizable beer, but these things happen, and as White says above, it’s still the same beer in the bottle. One thing that does standout now is that Pale Ale is the only one of their six year round beers listed on their website that isn’t named after a fish.

There have been many  name disputes in the craft beer business recently. The Birmingham Weekly last week published a roundup of many trademark disputes between craft brewers and it was reported earlier this week that Firestone Walker would rename their Abacus because of a wine by the same name.

Based on what I have been told, it is likely but not confirmed that Yellow Tail wine was involved in this name change. If you know more about the change leave a comment below.

A Great Weekend of Beer

San Salvador Saison

San Salvador Saison

I usually make it a point to have a couple good beers every weekend, but for some reason this weekend seemed to  be all about beer. Maybe it was the rain on Saturday, what else is there to do when it rains? Regardless of the reason, I drank some great beer this weekend.

Friday night I had dinner at KNB Wine Cellars and somehow managed to only have one beer. Their tap list is so good it was hard to decide on what to drink but I had Vrienden, the slightly sour and a little sweet (thanks to hibiscus flowers) New Belgium/Allagash collaboration. This wasn’t the first time I had Vrienden and I’m still undecided on it. The first time I had it out of a bottle I thought it was good but not great. I had it on draft about a month ago and really enjoyed it. This time it seemed sweeter than I remember, the fruity hibiscus flowers were very apparent. A good beer but I didn’t like it as much as I remembered.

Saturday I started the day off watching the SDSU/BYU game and opened my last bottle of Deschutes 2009 The Abyss. It’s been reported that many of The Abyss bottles from 2009 were infected and had off smells and flavors which was the case with this bottle. (The last bottle I opened before this one was last summer and the off smell/flavor wasn’t nearly as prominent.) There was a strong Brett smell and some off flavors, it wasn’t terrible but didn’t taste right. I’ve heard some people say they really like these infected bottles, and others say they can’t stomach it at all and have to pour it out. I was able to drink about half the bottle but am glad I don’t have any more of these bottles sitting around.

A bit later in the day I went to The Linkery for their 6th anniversary where they had some nice beers on tap. I started off with Ballast Point’s San Salvador Saison, which now is about five or six months old. I had a small taster of San Salvador at the Ballast Point 14th Anniversary Festival when it was fresh and it was one of my favorite beers of the day. If memory serves me it has changed a bit, but it still a great beer. It has a much stronger yeast characteristic that gives it a bit of a sweet flavor up front. There is still plenty of spice in there but the yeast is what stands out. I also had Black Market’s Rye IPA on cask dry hopped with Cascade and Amarillo hops. This was only my second time having this GABF gold medal winning beer, plenty of citrus hops and a nice mouthfeel from the cask.

Later that night I ended up at Counterpoint where they had a keg of Lost Abbey’s Red Poppy on. This is one of my favorite sours but sadly it’s pretty rare. I heard they weren’t doing too many kegs of it this year, so far I’ve seen it at Eleven, Ritual Tavern and now Counterpoint. If you see this on tap I highly suggest it. Bottles have started showing up at some of the better liquor stores in town, but they surely won’t last long. I also tried a Victory Golden Monkey, a strong Belgian-style golden ale, it was slightly sweet and fruity and had some serious alcohol heat to the first few sips but was overall a good beer.

Sunday I had to go for a bike ride to burn off all these beer calories, but that ride took me right past Pizza Port Ocean Beach where I stopped in for a few beers. Jolly Pumpkin’s Madrugada Obscura is a nice slightly tart and sour but still good and roasted stout. If only this is what the infected 2009 The Abyss had tasted like. I haven’t seen this on draft before, but I know some bottles showed up recently at some local liquor stores, I highly recommend it. It’s sour, but not too sour, so give it a chance if you like stouts and are on the fence about sours. And being a Pizza Port, I just had to try Nickel Bag, the double IPA brewed with help from O’Brien’s Pub’s Tom Nickel. This was so smooth and easy to drink (for being 10% ABV) it could be dangerous. There are a ton of hops in there, but it’s not overpoweringly bitter, it has some citrus and pine flavors from the hops and a nice malt backbone to balance things out.

And for the final beer of the weekend I cracked open a 2011 Stone Belgo Old Guardian Barleywine while watching the Oscar’s. I would have loved to do a side-by-side comparision for the Belgo and the regular, but wasn’t able to do that last night (I’m sure I’ll get another opportunity in the future). I really enjoyed the Belgo OG. The Belgian yeast made it fairly sweet, but not in an overpowering or cloying and syrupy kind of way, which took a lot of the alcohol heat off. At about $6/22oz this is a solid beer. I can’t wait to try it along side the original OG and probably put some of both versions away to age for a while.
